WALKING TOUR TO BRROKLYN BRIDGE IN NEW YORK |
On May 24, 1883, after 14 years of hard work, the great east river bridge between the independent cities of new York and Brooklyn was dedicated and declared open to the public. A parade was staged and sponsored by both cities, speeches were given and the day ended with fireworks display.
The structure of the Brooklyn bridge represented an unparalleled technological achievement and a remarkable municipal consensus. During construction hazardous working conditions claimed more than 30 lives and several laborers suffered permanent disability.
The world's first steel suspension bridge was an engineering triumph and a product largely of immigrant labor.
The impressive bridge spans the East river from Brooklyn to lower Manhattan and stretches for about 1.5 km. An elevated pedestrian path gives you the opportunity to have a great view of downtown Manhattan's skyline, with a particularly nice view of the magnificent Woolworth building.
If you have decided to spend some days in New York, a nice walk through this bridge can unveil you interesting aspects of the city.
