TOUR TO SAINT PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL IN NEW YORK |
Saint Patrick's cathedral was built in the beginning of the nineteenth century by the archibishop Hughes who was the founder of the Fordham University which became of the Jesuits after his death. Saint Patricks' is the largest catholic church in US and the eleventh largest in the world, following the marks on the floor of saint Peter's basilica in Rome.
The bishop Hughes had arrived in America from Ireland in 1817 and he was able to raise the money to lay the cornerstone and begin the construction ( 1858). The general plan is a latin cross, the facade is in marble. The bronzed doors are remarkable and represent saint Francesca Cabrini, partron of the immigrants and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton the first American-born saint.
The cathedral is located in front of the Rockefeller center and has hanging on the facade the Us flag and the flag of the vatican as it is the see of the archdiocese of New York.
