TOUR TO GRAND CENTRAL STATION WITH LICENSED TOUR GUIDE OF NEW YORK |
There are few buildings in New York that capture the public imagination as does Grand Central Terminal, classical example of Beaux- Arts magnificence on 42 street in New York City. This magnificent building stands in the heart of midtown Manhattan, and the terminal serves as an urban crossroads. For million of people, Grand Central Terminal remains a symbol of new York and its power.
The station was built in 1910 and has a great sculptural group " Transportation" installed on top in 1914. In 1917 a traffic viaduct running around the station was built to bring traffic directly from the southern section of Park Avenue. The statue of Commodore Vanderbilt, president of the New York Central railroad from 1868 to 1877 is visible in front of the lower part of the station's large center window.
In 1834 the New York and Harlem railroad first carried passengers on upper Fourth Avenue ( named park Avenue in 1888 from 42 street to 85 street. Because of the increased traffic, smoke and noise, the city required the railroad to lower its tracks into an open cut or tunnel from 46th to 96th streets
The center of the station is famous for the zodiac signs painted on its celings and for the brass made clock from Tiffany. Each of the four clock faces are made from opal and this busy point of the station is one of the main daily meeting points of New York.
